How to: Peephole

Today’s project was inspired by this Apartment Therapy post from last November. Living in a rental, installing something like this wasn’t an option, so I thought I’d try to recreate it in a completely reversible way.

Step 1: Spray your fabric with Stiffen Stuff. Once dry, sketch and then cut out your desired shape.

Step 2: Trace and then cut out a hole for the peephole.

Step 3: Using fabric paint, decorate your peephole surround.

Step 4: Let the paint dry completely. Place the fabric piece around your peephole.

Step 5: Set your iron to high heat with no steam. To keep the paint from sticking to the iron, cover the piece with some scrap fabric before ironing Iron over your piece, keeping the iron moving at all times and focusing on the edges.

All done!

Inspiration Websites

Today I thought I’d share a few of the blogs/websites that I visit every day. One of the best things about the internet (and there are many, many good things) is that it gives you access to wildly creative people and ideas you might otherwise never have known. These sites inspire me every day to try new things and get better at old things.

I think Apartment Therapy was probably the first design website I began visiting regularly. Their House Tours are one of my favorite ways to waste a few hours. I love seeing how other people live, and the creative ways they decorate their homes. It’s updated regularly, so it’s one I check repeatedly throughout the day!

The blog for Craft Magazine. Everything crafty you could possibly need. I mean, they posted a recipe to make Cadbury Creme Eggs today… what more could you want?!?

Design Sponge is the Holy Grail of design blogs. Amazing photography, simple yet impressive projects, gorgeous home tours. This blog is what my blog wants to be when it grows up.

I just discovered Young House Love a few weeks ago, and have since spent countless hours exploring the amazing renovation this young couple has undertaken. This is the kind of project I would love to tackle one day, and watching them go through both the joys and difficulties involved makes me even more eager to get started!

Well, there are just a few of the sites I visit regularly. What sites inspire you?

Before and After: Chalkboard Globe

I have to admit something… I’m kind of torn on this project. I love the way it turned out, but looking back at the pictures, I kind of miss the classic school room look! I might just have to go scour my local antiques shops for a new vintage globe!

Part of that might stem from the complete nightmare this project evolved into. This was not my first attempt – there are several coats of paint under that chalkboard finish that looked SO TERRIBLE and took SO LONG I almost chucked the whole thing in the trash several times. Thankfully I persisted, and really do like the finished product.

I used this chalkboard paint, which I found at Hobby Lobby. It covered really easily, taking only 2 coats, so I have lots left over for other projects. One thing I did notice was that the paint STINKS. If possible, try to use it in a well ventilated space, or risk one heck of a headache. I used a large sponge brush, and each coat took me no more than 10 minutes. I let the paint cure for 24 hours before writing on it.

Papercutting, aka Scherenschnitte, has always fascinated me. I love the delicate and intricate designs, and admire the skill and dedication it must take to create them. Here are a few cool examples of different styles of papercutting that I found on Etsy.

Meaning “tiny things” in Spanish, Cosas Mínimas is the Etsy shop of Blanca Gómez. Based in Madrid, Spain, Blanca is an illustrator with a wide variety of corporate clients, ranging from Dwell Magazine to Honda. The illustrations she sells in her Etsy shop are bright and fun, with simple, bold design. They would look just as at home in a kids room as in your living room! Here are a few of my favorites:

How to: Fortune Frames

I have to admit… my favorite thing about getting Chinese food is often reading my fortune at the end of the meal. Ninety percent of the time, they’re rubbish – often not really fortunes at all. But occasionally I happen upon one that speaks to me. I’ve been saving the best ones for years, sticking them on mirrors, carrying them in wallets, never knowing quite what to do with them, but not feeling right throwing them away. I don’t know why this project didn’t occur to me sooner!

For this project, you’ll need small frames (I found mine at the $1 store), a sheet of white paper or cardboard, a sheet of black paper, double-sided tape and fortunes.

Step 1:  Open your frame, and using the back piece as a template, measure out and cut your white paper or cardboard (I used some mat board that I had laying around from another project).

Step 2: Based on the size of your frames, decide how big you want the black pieces behind your fortunes to be. My frames are 3 1/2 x 5, so I decided to make my black pieces 2 x 3.

Step 3: Using the double-sided tape attach your fortune to the black piece. I just eyeballed it, but you can measure it out precisely if you’d like.

Step 4: Attach the black piece to the white piece.

Step 5: Pop everything into your frame, and you’re done!

How to: Dog Bed

Sadly, after my move, I no longer have a dog living with me. But I do have two dogs who come to visit regularly, and I want them to be comfortable when they come over, so I decided to sew them a dog bed.

For this project, you’ll need a twin sized foam mattress pad ($10 at Target) & 1 yard of heavy-duty fabric.

Step 1: Iron your fabric. Create hems on the shorter ends by folding in 1″, ironing the fold flat and sewing it down.

Step 2: Bringing the two ends together, find the center and mark it with a pin. Next, fold the two ends toward the pin, overlapping it slightly on each side (the right side of your fabric should be on the inside at this point). Sew up each side.

Step 3: Turn your cover right side out, and measure the width.

Step 4: Fold your foam mattress pad in 3. Trim the width of your foam pad to 1″ smaller than your cover.

Step 5: If you want to keep your dog bed nice and simple, you’re done! Just slip the tri-folded pad into your new cover. But I decided to decorate mine bit.

Step 6: Using the freezer paper technique that I talked about in this post, I made a little dog paw stencil.

A word of wisdom from me to you… don’t try to get a dog to pose on the bed before the paint is completely dry. Trust me on this one, folks.

Etsy Favorites: I Want to Go Camping!

The past few days in Memphis have been gloriously warm, and it’s given me a serious case of Spring Fever. Being cooped up in the office when it’s this nice outside is just cruel! This is camping weather, people! What I wouldn’t give to be sitting in front of a crackling fire with a beer, a guitar and good friends right now.
